Samaria, Lasithi, Knossos – Gastronomy and Mythol

The highlight of our week was hiking the Samaria Gorge. We took a bus from Hania (NW end of the island) one and a half hours up. The hike was 7 hours down into the Gorge and spectacular scenery. Even I was impressed with the geology! (Though my knees weren’t).

We also made the trip to the Lasithi Plateau to see the cave where Zeus was born. Apparently his mother, Rhea, was getting ticked off that her husband, Saturn, was eating all their babies so when she was pregnant with Zeus she fled to this cave to protect him. It was spectacular.

Another highlight was the palace of Knossos where we also learned several new things. This is the palace where the Minotaur, half man half bull, is said to lived in the palace’s many roomed maze. Every year seven girls and seven boys from Athens were sent to Knossos for him to eat. What we learned is that life was probably very good in Knossos ( the first flush toilets in the world) . It was peaceful,replica handbags, no walls of defense, and may have been ruled by queens of the Minoan dynasty. There is a possibility that the “boys and girls” were sent as young couples to repopulate the palace and life was so good that they stayed. Otherwise, we spent the rest of the time at fabulous pebbled beaches, eating dolmades,Marc Jacobs Handbags, souvlaki, mousaka, baklava, and drinking raki. We need to work on getting more sleep next phase. The locals eat dinner at 10:00pm and we seem to have fallen in to that pattern, but no complaints. We are taking a boat to the island of Santorini tomorrow.
